Info

For many hundreds of years the Tyne was one of Britain’s busiest rivers. Unlocking the Quayside tells the story of Newcastle Gateshead Quays from the days when the docks were packed with ships, cargoes, sailors and traders, to the exciting transformation of the 21st century. Take a walk along the waterfront and into history.

The story, and our walk, starts in The Close, one of the oldest parts of Newcastle. It gradually leads you forward in time as you wander past medieval warehouses, 16th and 17th century merchants’ houses, an 18th century church, 19th and 20th century shipping offices, and 21st century art. Crossing the Gateshead Millennium Bridge brings you right up to the present day and the magnificent, futuristic Sage Gateshead music centre before you stroll back to the north bank to complete this circular tour.

Packed with new and old photographs. Maps.
